Who We Are

Our mission at NaperCov is to glorify God by being an authentic Christian community that brings people to Jesus Christ, builds them up to maturity in the faith, and equips them to be disciple makers who KNOW, LOVE and SERVE God.

As we pursue our mission we work toward fulfilling our vision of an increasingly diverse, compassionate community committed to knowing, loving and serving Jesus in our neighborhoods and world.

Our history

Naperville Covenant Church had its beginnings in 1974 in the home of a couple with deep roots in the Evangelical Covenant Church. After just three years, a growing attendance required a larger facility, so worship services began at Lincoln Jr. High School on January 9, 1977. In 1981 the founding members broke ground on a new building on the corner of Hobson and Naper, which remains the current location. The first service in the new building was December 20, 1981 and second addition built in 1987. Since its founding, our congregation has been served by six pastors: Art Fretheim, Darryl Larson, Greg Asimakoupoulos, Kent Anderson, Scot Gillan, and Leslie X. Sanders, as well as by many capable staff members.

We as a church have always had a strong connection to the local community. As we have grown and matured as a church, our mission and vision have grown and matured along with us. Since those early years on a quiet suburban corner, Naperville Covenant Church now sits at a bustling retail and residential crossroads. We feel challenged and called to take advantage of our physical location as a meeting place and crossroads of culture here in Naperville.

The Evangelical Covenant Church

The Evangelical Covenant Church seeks to form and nurture communities that are deeply committed to Jesus Christ and passionately engaged in Christ’s mission in the world.

For Covenant people, our essential beliefs are summed up in what we call Covenant Affirmations. The purpose of Covenant affirmations is to make clear the values and principles that have guided the Evangelical Covenant Church since its founding in 1885.

  • We affirm the centrality of the word of God.

  • We affirm the necessity of the new birth.

  • We affirm a commitment to the whole mission of the church.

  • We affirm the church as a fellowship of believers.

  • We affirm a conscious dependence on the Holy Spirit.

  • We affirm the reality of freedom in Christ.

He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8
